Phi Theta Kappa presented the 2017 Alliance for Educational Excellence Award to Academic Partnerships during PTK Catalyst, its annual convention held April 6-8, in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Eric Ban, Senior Vice President of Program Innovation, accepted the award on behalf of Academic Partnerships.

“This award is being presented in recognition of the work Academic Partnerships has undertaken to help community colleges meet the challenge of internationalization,” said Phi Theta Kappa’s President and CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner. “As a result of Phi Theta Kappa’s work with Academic Partnerships, community college students have increased access to academically rigorous curricula that contributes to the development of a global mindset and access to meaningful credentials from global universities.”

In 2001, Phi Theta Kappa, Phi Beta Kappa and the National Honor Society (high schools) launched the Alliance for Educational Excellence to promote excellence at all levels of education. Phi Theta Kappa has assumed the leadership role on this initiative, which now includes many education–based organizations. This award is not presented every year and is reserved for organizations and individuals that have provided extraordinary leadership on a national or international level in the field of education.

Academic Partnerships CEO Carl Sparks said their organization is honored to receive the Alliance for Educational Excellence Award.

“Our purpose at Academic Partnerships is to increase global access to high-quality, affordable higher education,” Sparks said. “Through our partnership, we are privileged to offer Phi Theta Kappa students with access to International Honor Certificates from some of the top universities in the world.

“Helping students achieve personal and professional success is an important part of our mission and one we feel is closely aligned with the mission of Phi Theta Kappa.”

Past recipients of the Alliance for Educational Excellence Award have included the Coca-Cola Foundation and the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation for their support of several Phi Theta Kappa scholarship programs, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation for providing opportunities to community college students, and the Hites Family Community College Scholarship Foundation for endowing a Phi Theta Kappa transfer scholarship.
