Declining On-Campus MBA Thrives Online

Challenge: A university sought to increase enrollments in its AACSB-accredited MBA program as on-campus enrollments had fallen dramatically. Needing to attract students and strengthen the program's brand, the university aspired to create a high-quality online version of the on-campus MBA program.

Solution: AP provided strategic guidance to help the university bring a high-quality online version of its MBA program to market. To meet the needs and expectations of a working adult target audience, we advised the program's leadership to adapt the price and admission requirements and provide convenient start times to attract qualified students.

Results: The university has experienced significant program expansion both regionally and nationally. As a result, the online MBA program grew 1,400% in its first year. Within 24 months, this AP partner enrolled more than 100 MBA students in each start date, exceeding the university's expectations for the program. Since then, new enrollments have grown 45% year over year. Today, this university is recognized as a vibrant, student-focused institution with a thriving online MBA that attracts students from all over America thanks to its high-quality, affordable and accessible program.

Field Sales Spikes Enrollment Growth

Challenge: A public university with declining enrollment in its Master of Education degrees sought to reverse course by going online and serving a broader population of teachers.

Solution: AP partnered to expand the university's online brand presence and drive enrollment through an enhanced mix of marketing and student recruitment activities. In addition to digital tactics including display advertising, email, and search engine optimization, a team of field sales representatives was deployed throughout the region in a focused effort to increase program awareness among education stakeholders and potential student audiences.

Results: The combination of dedicated field sales activity and a robust digital marketing strategy enabled the university to:

  • Grow enrollments from an adjacent state by 150% in one year
  • Become the largest online provider of education programs in the state and rank #2 among U.S. public graduate education programs based on enrollments

Faculty Workshops Deliver Best Practices

Challenge: The program director for an established online nursing program was looking to update curriculum and provide faculty with ideas, tools and best practices for online facilitation.

Solution: In coordination with the on-campus instructional design team, we developed and facilitated a series of on-campus faculty workshops delivered over two months. These highly interactive workshops covered topics including authentic assessment, cognitive load, providing feedback, and best practices in online course facilitation.

Results: Participation was high and all attendees, including the instructional designers and program director, provided rave reviews and noted in post-workshop surveys that their expectations were met or exceeded.

Assistance with Program Design and Course Development – Emergent Program

Challenge: A new AP partner with limited online programming experience and resources sought to bring on new programs in multiple disciplines while migrating to a new LMS.

Solution: AP addressed these challenges on multiple fronts by: (1) conducting on-site workshops and webinars for faculty to aid in program planning and quality course design; (2) working with the LMS provider to make sure faculty and ID/IT staff completed their LMS training; (3) providing additional staff resources to support faculty in course development, supplementing the on-campus instructional design team; and (4) ensuring that all courses were reviewed for design and technical quality before opening the new courses to students.

Results: With AP's auxiliary support, the highly anticipated online programs launched successfully and on time.

Program Design and Course Development Process – Growing to Scale

Challenge: A new AP partner with previous online program experience needed to prepare for rapid enrollment growth.

Solution: As part of its professional development for faculty, the AP team led a workshop on strategies for scalability, facilitation and new technology tools to help instructors proactively design for and manage large numbers of students in online courses. The team also created a new custom course shell for use in the partner's LMS to ensure university branding and adherence to quality standards while providing an overall enhanced student experience.

Results: The faculty members were pleased with on-site training, learned best practices and gained a better understanding of their role in course facilitation. The course shell promoted uniform design across online courses, resulting in a seamless student experience.

Established Online Presence – Adding a New Program in a New Discipline

Challenge: A longtime partner with a successful RN-to-BSN program was ready to add a new online MBA program to its degree offerings.

Solution: Our Academic Services team provided guidance to an on-campus Instructional Design (ID) team for the review of a new custom course shell based on their preferences. We also provided a research grant during program planning to assist with the selection and adoption of a new ed tech application to promote student collaboration.

Results: This legacy partner was highly appreciative of the customized and supportive feedback for their new program. The results from the research grant will develop a model that can be used by other partners in a similar adoption process.
